The Most Creative Map Joke in Film

The normal schedule for my alternating Saturday nights and then alternating within the alternates between the alternating Saturday nights is supposed to be a geeky little fantasy game known as Dungeons & Dragons.  We play a strange combination of 1st and 2nd Edition with some custom rules thrown in, and a bit of 3rd Edition beginning to creep in.  4th Edition can go to hell.  But this week, my night to play Dungeon Master, was not to be, so my best friend Hugh and I decided to catch a movie instead.  The choices were Wrath of the Titans or The Pirates! Band of Misfits, both in 3D.  With less than 30 minutes to arrive at the 10:35 showing of our choice, we chose to see Pirates, and what a fun choice it was! Continue reading

Any Resemblance to Real Law is Also Entirely Coincidental

So a few months ago I had the displeasure of sitting through an episode of Gloria Alred’s We the People, and it had something to do with copyright law.  Now, I won’t claim to be a copyright expert, but many years ago, I took my writing seriously, and I got as intimate as I could with a more than passing knowledge of copyright law.  So I’m watching the episode, and Alred starts explaining what her reasoning for her verdict is, but she flubs copyright law horribly.  I actually projected vocally at the television, “That’s now how it works, you idiot!”  I mean, seriously, she was the bumbling prosecutor on O.J.: The Glove Didn’t Fit Years, but I would have thought that anyone pretending to be a judge would have at least gone and researched some before rendering her verdict.

Now I’m sitting here watching today’s episode of Days of Our Lives (yeah, okay, who would have thought I’d be writing that line?), and my DVR picked up the last few moments of Alred’s show.

All characters and events depicted in this work are fictitious.  Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Well that certainly explains it.  And not just because Gloria Alred is a fictional character.

Where Do Broken Hearts Go?

Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston

It’s sort of strange.  Back in high school, when Whitney Houston first hit the scene, I bought her albums, I sang along with her songs, and I enjoyed her music.  As time went on, my musical tastes changed, and I didn’t stay in touch with her music.  Then the negativity hit with all of the Bobby Brown stuff, and all of the hard knocks of her life started hitting the mainstream media, and I was less and less interested in what was going on in her life.  Her life had become a tragedy waiting to happen.

And then she died.

I can’t say as it came as a shock.  But I found I found myself remembering all of those good times singing her earlier songs.  And I have to admit that I truly see the loss of her life as a loss of an extremely talented individual who made some poor decisions, but who lived a strong, powerful life while she was among us, and while I can’t say she influenced my singing career (which is a horrific tale that even my shower won’t speak of), I know that there are many whose lives were touched in that manner. I Think I’ve Gone Gay for Glee

Chord Overstreet

Chord Overstreet

Okay, so I swear to you, this wasn’t supposed to happen.  I had swore off ever watching Glee.  I wasn’t at all interested in it, had no intent of ever catching an episode, and was never, ever, ever going to take an interest in it.  But then… then I caught sight of the new boy in town, and there was a slight pang of interest.  Still, I had seen the commercials, and although being gay myself, I just sort of wanted to shake Kurt and beat him in the face a couple of times and tell him that he didn’t need to be so stereotypically swishy.  So that was it.  I’d settle for seeing Chord Overstreet on Ellen, and not worry about ever catching him on Glee.

Mind you, that was until every other program I had even the slightest interest at all in decided to take a break and go on temporary hiatus.  Exhausted of reruns of everything else, laying in bed late at night, I started flipping aimlessly through that accursed ON DEMAND, and there it was under HD TV Series.  Staring at me, taunting me, daring me to watch, compelling me to prove to myself I was never going to watch another episode.  Luring me in.

So I clicked. Continue reading

BBB… BioWare…?

Okay, so I’m severely behind the rest of the world in appreciating the wonder that is the Mass Effect series, but since it’s science fiction, and the latest in the series offers a gay-friendly storyline, it’s admittedly piqued my interest.  But I’m one of those players who can’t just sit down in front of the third in a series and start playing, so I recently picked up a copy of Mass Effect, sans sequel identifiers, to begin playing (though, playing… that hasn’t exactly happened yet).

At any rate, I’m doing my daily scour of Facebook, and lo and behold, a friend of mine has posted an article about the Better Business Bureau getting involved in a “false advertising” case regarding Mass Effect 3.  For those not following — and since I know about it and I’m not following, I suspect most of you will know more than I — the ending of Mass Effect 3 has disappointed a few people.  BioWare has been doing damage control all over the place, even planning to enhance the ending to the game. I’m Back… And It’s About Time…

Well, nothing like a good four, five year break from a website to realize that you’ve really missed writing on it.  What excuse will do for a huge lapse in web-based contact with the virtual world?  I suppose I had partly grown bored of the old layout — and while no one’s actually seen them, I’ve gone through at least three designs before the iteration you see here now.  Partly I’ve been busy with school for a few years now (presently pursuing a BAS in Game Art).  And partly, well, who really knows?

The good news is I’ve missed sharing my thoughts with the rest of the world.  The bad news, of course, is that I have no idea if anyone out there is even reading this site anymore, and further, I’ve got to put all of the old material back in here over the next few weeks.  Still, with the new layout, and a brand new engine running things behind the scenes, I’ve now got the opportunity to blather on endlessly on this newly designed site.

I know some of you will miss the old format, what with the row of pictures that used to adorn the top.  In truth, I thought about keeping that basic format, but then, I thought, let’s go for something larger and classier.  So I’ve replaced it with the single random image to the left.  Hey… there’s lots to see, and I’ll be adding more all the time.  Of course, you don’t come here for the images, you come here for the wit, right?  (Right?  Oh no.  It really has been the pictures this whole time, hasn’t it?)

Well, anyway, I just wanted to say, “Hello again!”  Stay tuned for more fun to come!
